Cheap Rack-mount

or, How to colo on a budget

Once upon a time, I was working for an ISP which gave me an ISDN line and I located BL dot ORG on it. It started off as a place for me to have a presence on the net not associated with work, but it somehow turned into the private email and web hosting location for a few friends of mine.

After I left that job, the ISDN line went away, so I had to find a way to get BL back online. I had a spare Sun SparcStation 2, laying around, so I installed NetBSD on it and started hunting for a place to put it. After asking around, a friend of mine suggested that I take a look at AustinTX.com. They only charged $90/month for a 1U system, which my SS2 qualified as.

Well, the SS2 was a bit pokey, and even a little unstable, so after one of its crashes, I got upset and started looking into 1U PC systems.

More digging turned up this list of parts which BL is now being served off of.
